(I went to WorldCon! It was great! I met
seekingferret and
ursula and can confirm they are real life humans! I have a lot of thoughts and feelings about filk, but I'm not sure how much of that blogging is going to be under this name versus my wallet name. Maybe later!)
I feel like, while the Wetlands have all these horrific memories of the time they went to war with the Aiel twenty years ago, and even their pregnant women could kill a half-dozen swordsmen before they got taken out, the Aiel have corresponding horrific memories of snow. Sure, we disposed of all those pesky Wetlands guys, and took out King Laman, but do you know that across the Dragonwall they have fluffy white water that falls from the sky when it's cold? No fair, how are we supposed to fight in this.
"He left us" echoes of the Rand and Egwene tension from episodes 1 and 2
Petition to just bring Loial everywhere to do all the infodumps. No need to worry about "As You Know, Bob" when it's an Ogier.
Lan "I can tell the differences between all Nynaeve's subtle facial expressions" Mandragoran
Moiraine: Do not channel within the Ways!
Egwene: I can defeat this creepy evil wind.
Nynaeve: HOLD MY BEER
Min: aw geez not this Aes Sedai bull again
Rand: hey, a cute bartender lady, what could possibly go wrong
Perrin, the world's first vegetarian werewolf
Rand has a baby? And he's rocking it?
Perrin: "what if you're just wrong"
Moiraine: "doubt is the first step to surrender to the dark side" Hmm, this seems dangerous. Maybe I'm just biased by weird philosophical thought experiments where the copout is "what if this superpowered entity is just...not 100.00% informed and accurate about everything all the time?" But I feel like that level of certainty is more dangerous than healthy skepticism.
"He probably went back to Tar Valon for the bloody stolen dagger" pls no.
"he left us/well you're the expert" there it is!
awkward love triangle nonsense pls no. I just don't really see anything that's been Perrin/Egwene in a shippy sense, other than "surviving road trips of doom together." (And I acknowledge that Rand/Mat shippers find this very appealing!) I'm going to be hopeful and imagine that this is the price we have to pay for a bunch more miscommunication subplots down the line just getting skipped?
"I've taken everything from you" I feel like there are a couple places where their Lan seems OOC from book Lan. Not to the point that "every time he shows emotions is unrealistic!" but like "haha this bathtub is cold" doesn't really seem like Lan. So for me this is one of them. Without Moiraine he'd be on a suicide mission!
"I had nothing to live for and nothing to die for" Half true, agreed with the first part, but again, he would have found some way to throw himself into avenging Malkier and fighting evil even without her.
"I don't think you could call this tracking" shots fired
"I hadn't noticed" Lan the snarker. See, these parts are humorous while still being IC for me.
"when you're actually ready to talk, you find me." foreshadowing?
"I've already made that mistake once" ugh, no, let's not double back on the "Egwene/Rand are totally shippy except maybe they're not" thing.
The Aes Sedai-Warder bond does make sense for them to be thinking about at this stage, though!
"If it's you, I will always stand by you, you know that" will you though?
"I hate it when he calls me that" Lan and Bukama are almost as bad as Siuan and Moiraine when it comes to titles! (Although Siuan/Moiraine definitely has more going on.)
"Don't those kids own you?" Which kids, the ones Lan was playing with at dinner? Is this trying to say something about...ohhh the Emond's Field kids. Yeah, from Nynaeve's POV she's part of the "adult" group babysitting the little 20-year-olds.
And...the reveal is just a series of flashbacks and archery superpowers. A little underwhelming, but we were running out of time in the episode, okay.
Min met Tam before Rand was born, wow!
I don't really see a lot of chemistry between Min and Rand beyond "oh jeez, someone else wants my superpowers, ugh"
"rainbows and carnivals" Luca plot confirmed! (Kidding. I hope.)
"I couldn't sleep" Nyneave not rushing to that Three Oaths life ;)
So what next? I feel like the Lan-Nynaeve-Perrin-Egwene shot is setting up for a "cavalry come to the rescue" type scene, but I also feel like there really isn't much good they can do at this point and both Lan and Perrin at least know that. Also, where is Loial??
I will probably do a follow-up spoilery post fleshing out my thoughts on some of these.
